Psychiatric-Mental Health NP: Role and Certification

Preview for design review. This sample has not received final editorial approval and is not an eligibility or practice determination.

What a psychiatric-mental health NP does across the lifespan, the AANPCB and ANCC certification routes, and how Bellarmine's PMHNP track is structured.

A psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) evaluates and treats mental health conditions across the lifespan. The role covers psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis, medication management, and psychotherapy for individuals, families and groups, in many settings. Two national bodies certify the role: the AANP Certification Board (AANPCB), which runs a PMHNP exam, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which offers the PMHNP-BC.

This article covers the role, certification, how one Bellarmine track is structured, and the practice and pay facts that apply to nurse practitioners.

What a PMHNP Does

PMHNPs conduct psychiatric evaluations, diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe and manage medications, and provide psychotherapy and counseling for individuals, families and groups. They also coordinate care with other clinicians. Bellarmine’s PMHNP track describes the role in the same way: psychiatric care, medication management and advanced psychotherapy across a variety of mental health settings.

Where PMHNPs Work

PMHNPs work in outpatient mental health clinics, hospitals, community agencies and other settings. The ANA’s overview of NP specialties describes each specialty as tied to a specific patient population. Settings vary by employer and state.

Certification

Body Credential What the exam covers
AANP Certification Board (AANPCB) PMHNP exam Entry-level, psychiatric and mental health care across the lifespan
American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) PMHNP-BC Psychiatric-mental health NP, across the lifespan

Education and Credentials: A Bellarmine Example

The Bellarmine PMHNP track is a 24-month program. The catalog describes a first year with core MSN courses, including advanced physical assessment, advanced pathophysiology and advanced pharmacology, and a second year focused on psychiatric disease management, advanced psychotherapy and practicum. Learning is remote and asynchronous, with an in-person intensive between the two years. The catalog lists 47 credit hours and 810 practicum hours.

The tuition page prices the track at 16 standard credits and 29 specialty credits, for a total of $40,040. That arithmetic gives 45 credits, not 47.

The school also lists a post-master’s PMHNP certificate. The tuition page lists 21 credits and $17,535 for that option. Confirm whether it fits your existing MSN.

What the Exam Covers

  • Scientific foundations: anatomy, neuroanatomy, pathophysiology, epidemiology of psychiatric disorders, and growth and development.
  • Pharmacology: psychopharmacology, drug interactions, medication monitoring, and polypharmacy.
  • Nonpharmacological therapies: including electroconvulsive therapy and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.
  • Psychotherapies: individual, group and family approaches, and theories of change.
  • Assessment and diagnosis: clinical interviewing, psychiatric evaluation, screening instruments, and DSM-based diagnostic decisions.
  • Care practices: risk assessment, crisis management, trauma-informed care, and social determinants of health.
  • Professional role: evidence-based practice, ethics and legal requirements, scope and standards, and telehealth.

Practice Authority

The AANP tracks each state’s nurse practitioner practice level as full, reduced or restricted. Under full practice, an NP can evaluate patients, diagnose, order and interpret tests, and manage treatment, including prescribing, under the state board of nursing. AANP reports that over half of states and territories have adopted full practice authority for NPs. Mental health prescribing and telehealth rules can differ within a state, so check both.

Pay and Job Outlook

BLS reports one median pay figure for all nurse practitioners: $132,300 in May 2025. It does not publish a separate figure for psychiatric-mental health NPs in the sources used here. Check BLS state data and job postings for your area, and remember that settings and schedules change pay.

Who This Role Suits

  • Do you want to work with mental health across the lifespan?
  • Are you comfortable with medication management and psychotherapy?
  • Do you enjoy long-term relationships with patients and families?
  • What mental health experience do you already have, and how does it fit the role?

Questions to Ask a Program

  1. Which credit count applies to my start term, and what is the total cost?
  2. Which certification does the program prepare me for: AANPCB PMHNP, ANCC PMHNP-BC, or both?
  3. How are the remote learning and the in-person intensive scheduled, and what do they require of me?
  4. How many practicum hours are in psychiatric settings, and how is placement arranged for my state?
  5. If I already hold an MSN, does the post-master’s certificate fit my goals?

Next Steps

  • Confirm that your RN license is current and unrestricted.
  • Confirm the credit count and total cost for your start term with the program.
  • Confirm which exam (AANPCB or ANCC) your program prepares you for.
  • Check your state’s prescribing rules for psychiatric medications.
  • Save each source page with today’s date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a PMHNP prescribe medication?

Prescribing authority depends on the state. Many states allow PMHNPs to prescribe, and the rules vary. Check your state’s practice level on the current AANP map and the state board’s rules.

Is a PMHNP a psychiatrist?

No. A psychiatrist is a physician. A PMHNP is a nurse practitioner with a graduate nursing degree and national certification.
